Here is a framework for identifying the concepts of "National Interest", and how it varies across the various stages of development and growth of a nation. Also, although this is expressed as a continuum, nations need not necessary pass each stage one by one - but, can and often aspire to jump across levels - Thanks to Nitin Pai from the Takshashila Institution for rightly highlighting this in this framework created by the author.
